Is Make Up Feminist, 2021

Women have been wearing makeup for most of recorded history, but in the last 100 years the industry has become a product of misogyny and capitalism. Wearing makeup is expected of women, in dating, the workplace, and even the privacy of their own homes. It has become a way of controlling women and enforcing beauty standards. Cosmetic advertising has evolved from marketing makeup as a way to attract men or fit a standard of beauty, to recently being passed off as a feminist act of “looking good for yourself” to keep up with a more progressive society. This begs the question: is makeup feminist?
